Medica Mondial – Why Women Should Have Equal Rights With Men
The vast majority of Americans – across demographic and partisan lines – say that women should have equal rights with men. In fact, nine-in-ten Americans say it is very important or somewhat important that women have equal rights with men. The vast majority of people who say women should have equal rights with men are also convinced that there is more work to do on this issue. They say that not enough women are in positions of power; that women do not have the same legal rights as men; that gender-based discrimination persists in workplaces; that sexual harassment occurs in the workplace; and that different societal expectations prevent women from attaining equality with men.
These are some of the reasons that the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) focuses on improving women’s access to employment, education and health care. The convention states that states ratifying it must take concrete steps to promote and protect the rights of all women.
Medica mondiale believes that gender equality is not only a human right, but it also leads to economic development and sustainable growth. Providing equal opportunities for women and girls in the workplace, in society, and in politics and business contributes to reducing poverty, hunger, conflict, and environmental degradation. In addition, gender inequality is a major obstacle to the fulfilment of human potential.
It is essential that governments around the world address the challenges of gender inequality, which threatens the full achievement of human rights. This means fighting against all forms of discrimination, including violence against women and girls and the lack of adequate resources to provide the protections women and girls need.
Gender equality is a fundamental part of every person’s human rights and it can be achieved by ensuring that women have equal access to education, health services, the labor market, housing, and transportation. It is by promoting gender equality that countries are able to develop into their full potential.
In addition, granting women the same rights as men ensures that they have the ability to make their own choices and decide if and when to marry or have children. Gender equality also enables women to have better access to healthcare and it enables them to live free from all types of gender-based violence, such as rape, domestic or gender-based violence, female genital mutilation, and abortion.
Finally, a world where women have equal rights with men also helps to reduce infant mortality and ensures that mothers are able to better care for their children. In a world with equal rights, a woman can choose whether to stay at home with her children or work and receive the same pay as men. This allows her to give her children a better quality of life and set them up for success. It also means that they are able to access higher education and have more opportunities for a better future. The benefits of this are far-reaching, affecting everybody on the planet.
